The late master of horror would’ve been 77 today.

Like many directors, Wes Craven appeared on screen a handful of times over the years, perhaps most notably playing himself in New Nightmare. Of course, one could never forget his hilarious role as “Fred the Janitor” in Scream, and Craven also popped up for memorable cameos in Body Bags and even Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. More recently, he appeared on the small screen.

Airing on March 18th, 2013, the 17th episode of the fifth season of ABC’s Castle was titled “Scared to Death.” In the episode, when a young woman appears to have literally been scared to death three days after watching a “haunted” DVD, Castle and Beckett delve into one of their creepiest cases yet. To make matters worse, Castle becomes convinced that he too is marked for death when he accidentally watches the cursed video.

How does Wes Craven factor into the plot? Well, as it turns out, Castle happens to be friendly with Craven, who played himself for a brief cameo appearance in the episode. Looking for some advice on the creepy case, Castle calls Craven at his home, making for a humorous scene that would sadly be the final time we’d see the master of horror on screen.

We thought the clip might bring some much needed smiles today, so check it out below.
