Renny Harlin (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master) will take on directing duties for The Refuge. Highland Film Group controls worldwide distribution rights and is currently shopping the film at the European Film Market.
The follows Sergeant Rick Pedroni who returns from his time in Afghanistan seemingly changed after coming in contact with a malevolent force during combat. While military officials insist he is suffering from a brain injury, his wife begins to suspect something much more insidious is happening. As he undergoes group therapy with other soldiers, she comes to believe he has been possessed.
The film is set to begin filming in April in Bulgaria where Harlin currently resides. No casting has been announced for the film at this time.
Harlin’s career as a director has been an interesting one. After directing NOES4, he went onto Die Hard 2 and Cliffhanger. Later on he would jump between action and horror repeatedly with films like Deep Blue Sea, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and Exorcist: The Beginning.
“I love making horror films because of the visual opportunities and character studies they offer,” Harlin said in a statement quoted by Deadline. “The Refuge is a terrifying journey into the deepest corners of the human spirit. It’s not just a regular horror film about a haunted house or a merciless killer. It’s an examination of what can happen when an evil, demonic spirit possesses an innocent mind.”
