As we all know, some of the most shocking and appalling horror comes from real life. Such is the recent case of a Florida man who decapitated his mother with an ax on New Year’s Eve in Oldsmar, Florida, which sounds like it’s straight out of a slasher movie. The 23 year old native, Christian Jose Gomez, has had several previous arrests according to NBC News, is now being charged with first-degree murder.
But what reason could drive someone to commit such a crime? Well, the reason is possibly even more outrageous than the crime itself. He told the police he had been planning to kill his mother for two days because he was angry that his mother asked him to take some boxes to the attic. After he committed the crime, he disposed of the severed head in the garbage can, but left the body sitting next to the trash can when he realized it wouldn’t fit inside, according to local Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri. The body was later discovered by victim Marua Suarez Cassagne’s older son, who was at home while the murder was taking place, but didn’t know what was happening.
After a brief chase, Gomez was apprehended and it was revealed that the suspect suffers from schizophrenia and was supposed to not only be taking medication, but was committed for psychiatric evaluation at least once in the previous year. NBC was told by a relative that Gomez is a “a good person” who has had trouble coping with his illness.
