Ever since the surprisingly good Beyond Re-Animator hit DVD back in 2003, fans have wondered whether another continuation of Herbert West’s story would be in the cards. A politically charged sequel called House of Re-Animator was teased by those involved with the franchise for several years, but never got past the idea stage, and the series has remained dormant.
That is until now, as according to this IMDB listing, and this Facebook page, a film entitled Re-Animator: Evolution is scheduled to arrive in February 2017. However, before anyone gets too excited, this movie appears to have no direct ties to the prior Re-Animator films, and series star Jeffrey Combs is not involved. Instead, Re-Animator: Evolution’s Dr. Herbert West is played by actor Johnathon Schaech (Laid to Rest, Prom Night). Other listed cast members include Lin Shaye (Insidious), and horror legend Brad Dourif (Child’s Play, The Exorcist III). Hat tip to That’s Not Current for first reporting on Evolution’s existence.
The plot synopsis for Re-Animator: Evolution is as follows: “Pursued by the police, an ambitious neuroscientist uses a neutrino impulse to bring his dead wife back to life, unintentionally unlocking within her dormant powers that threaten the existence of everyone he knows.” Clearly, this is in no way a continuation of the Combs-era narrative, and – outside of the title and character name of Herbert West – seemingly couldn’t be much more different.
To top things off, based on scanning the posts on its FB page, Re-Animator: Evolution wasn’t even the film’s original title. Sadly, one wonders how many Re-Animator fans will see this movie on shelves next year, proceed to get all excited, then slowly realize it’s just some random low-budget horror film that was retooled to cash-in on an established name. Sigh. Bad form guys.
