Yesterday (Sept. 1st) was a rough day for horror fans; Universal Studios Hollywood closed down their “Universal House of Horrors” walk-through maze. This maze replaced the Van Helsing: Fortress Dracula back in 2007. House of Horrors was a tribute to Universal’s classic 1930’s-era monster movies. The attraction featured real-live performers dressed up as characters from Universal’s horror films including Norma Bates from Psycho, Frankenstein, The Mummy, The Wolfman, and other characters. The performer’s main role is to jump out and scare guests as they travel through the different sets from the films located on the sound stage.

Universal made the announcement on July 26, 2014 giving guests the chance to experience House of Horrors one last time before the closure on September 1, 2014. Dining and retail are the new experiences rumored to inhabit the former attraction, House of Horrors.

On a positive note, the House of Horrors maze will be transformed for Halloween Horror Nights. This attraction will be used for the Syfy’s reality/competition series Face Off. Guests will be able to face off against their worst nightmares. Since the House of Horrors opened, it has served as a themed maze in the theme park’s Halloween Horror Nights. Universal would increase the amount of characters in the maze and give it a unique theme. Universal Monster Remix, Chucky’s Funhouse, Vampire: Castle of the Undead and The Wolfman: Curse of Talbot Hall are a few of the themes used on this infamous stage.

Personally I find this news quite upsetting, I have many fond memories of this attraction. When my daughter was five years old, I can remember taking her through the maze with me, she was terrified but yet enjoyed every minute. It was “our attraction” every time we visited the park. I have not yet figured out if I am more upset with this attraction closing or the plans for the future. Dining and retail? Don’t we have enough of this? CityWalk is right around the corner. I suppose business is business.
