A Picture by A.M. Ewings is Worth a Thousand Wounds

Published

on

It takes a special kind of talent to make an audience flinch with a single image.  It’s an instinctive thing that you either have or you do not.  Horror photographer A.M. Ewings has it in spades, and his audience is growing by the day.  In fact, with over 1.4 million followers on his horror photography page, you might call his popularity a phenomenon, a wave that show no sign of ebbing anytime soon.

It only takes a few seconds browsing the gallery on his Facebook page to see that the man knows just what screws to turn to create tension.  Each image is a gut punch to the senses, visceral and violent.  Moreover, his recent adventures with 360 photography are nothing short of inspired.

The photographer started delving into dark art about four years ago, creating scenes that make the skin crawl and designing characters that are the stuff of nightmares.  It’s clear in these early images that Ewings has a keen eye for the unsettling, and that eye has become razor sharp over time.  Take the following image for example.

Not only is there genuine menace from the robed character (with a face reminiscent of the demon from The Exorcist), but his very presence seems to effect the girl with or without her direct knowledge.that this dark being is there.  This is all related directly to how Ewings creates his photo, a process that starts long before a single image is shot.

I had the good fortune of chatting with Ewings about that process recently, and he gave me a glimpse into how he creates each image.

“My mind is always on the go,” he explained.  “Sometimes I come up with story I want to tell and then build the character for that story.  Other times, the character is built and then I create their story.”

Character creation is a great joy for the photographer and he even remarked that he would love to some day spend his time creating characters for film.  Ewings currently has a cast of 13 characters, each with their own distinct style and brand of fear.  And there’s something here for whatever scares you.

Aside from still photography, Ewings has been making a name for himself in the realm of 360 degree photography and video and medium has only intensified the already visceral experience of his photography.  It’s one thing, for instance to open a photo of a bloody scene, and quite another when, with a tilt of your phone or a drag of the mouse, you realize the killer is still in the room and standing right behind you.

The immersive medium has boosted his already large following and one of his super creepy clowns even recently gave a shout out to iHorror and you can see it by clicking on the image below.

You can also get a feel for his 360 VR videos below.

The photographer clearly has his own distinctive style and voice and it will surely continue to serve him well.  Don’t forget to follow his photography page on Facebook and check out his YouTube Channel for more videos!

on

Eli Roth (Cabin Fever) and Crypt TV are knocking it out of the park with their new VR show, The Faceless Lady. For those unaware, this is the first fully scripted VR horror show on the market.

Even for masters of horror like Eli Roth and Crypt TV, this is a monumental undertaking. However, if I trust anyone to change the way that we experience horror, it would be these two legends.

The Faceless Lady

Ripped from the pages of Irish folklore, The Faceless Lady tells the story of a tragic spirit cursed to wander the halls of her castle for all of eternity. However, when three young couples are invited to the castle for a series of games, their fates may soon change.

So far, the story has provided horror fans with a gripping game of life or death that doesn’t look as if it will slow down in episode five. Luckily, we have an exclusive clip that may be able to satiate your appetites until the new premiere.

Airing on 4/25 at 5pmPT/8pmET, episode five follows our final three contestants in this wicked game. As the stakes are raised ever higher, will Ella be able to fully awaken her connection with Lady Margaret?

A new trailer for the movie formerly known as Pussy Island just dropped and it has us intrigued. Now with the more restrained title, Blink Twice, this  Zoë Kravitz-directed black comedy is set to land in theaters on August 23.

The film is packed with stars including Channing Tatum, Naomi Ackie, Alia Shawkat, Simon Rex, Adria Arjona, Haley Joel Osment, Christian Slater, Kyle MacLachlan, and Geena Davis.

The trailer feels like a Benoit Blanc mystery; people are invited to a secluded location and disappear one by one, leaving one guest to figure out what is going on.

In the film, a billionaire named Slater King (Channing Tatum) invites a waitress named Frida (Naomi Ackie) to his private island, “It’s paradise. Wild nights blend into sun-soaked days and everyone’s having a great time. No one wants this trip to end, but as strange things start to happen, Frida begins to question her reality. There is something wrong with this place. She’ll have to uncover the truth if she wants to make it out of this party alive.”
