‘My Best Friend’s Exorcism’ Gets a Film Adaptation From ‘Happy Death Day’ Director

My Best Friend's Exorcism

If you have yet to read My Best Friend’s Exorcism, it’s high time to move it up on your reading list. Thanks to Endeavor Content (the minds behind Killing Eve and Colette), Grady Hendrix’s throwback horror novel will be getting a film adaptation.

The novel (which has been described as an “unholy hybrid of Beaches and The Exorcist“) is set in 1988 and follows the friendship of high school junior Abby and her best friend since fourth grade, Gretchen. After the girls decide to try taking LSD, Gretchen begins to act…different. She’s moody, irritable, and bizarre incidents keep happening whenever she’s nearby. As Gretchen begins acting increasingly more erratic, Abby begins to suspect that Gretchen might actually be possessed by a demon.

As announced by The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming adaptation will be produced by Christopher Landon (writer/director of Happy Death Day). Landon will develop the film with the possibility of taking on the role of director, with the script written by Jenna Lamia (Awkward).

Of all the many “novel-to-screen” adaptations, it’s probably safe to say that horror novels tend to have the best track record. They’re hugely popular (just ask Stephen King) and they’re generally very loyal to the source material.

As a novel, My Best Friend’s Exorcism is often compared to films like Heathers and Jennifer’s Body, so this seems like the perfect pick for a retro-fantastic feature film adaptation.

But the fun doesn’t stop there; the critically-acclaimed author is on a roll. Hendrix’s novel about a haunted IKEA store, Horrorstöris currently being developed as a series by Josh Schwartz (Chuck, The O.C.) and Gail Berman (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel).

Hendrix has also recently written the screenplay for the upcoming Satanic Panic, produced by Fangoria and Aperture Entertainment, starring Rebecca Romijn and Jerry O’Connell, and based on a story co-written by Hendrix and Ted Geoghegan (We Are Still Here, Mohawk).

We’ll be sure to keep you posted as we hear more!

Winnie the Pooh 3

Wow, they’re churning things out fast! The upcoming sequel “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 3” is officially moving forward, promising an expanded narrative with a larger budget and the introduction of beloved characters from A.A. Milne’s original tales. As confirmed by Variety, the third installment in the horror franchise will welcome Rabbit, the heffalumps, and the woozles into its dark and twisted narrative.

This sequel is a part of an ambitious cinematic universe that reimagines children’s stories as horror tales. Alongside “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey” and its first sequel, the universe includes films such as “Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare”, “Bambi: The Reckoning,” and “Pinocchio Unstrung”. These movies are set to converge in the crossover event “Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble,” slated for a 2025 release.

The creation of these films was made possible when A.A. Milne’s 1926 children’s book “Winnie-the-Pooh” entered the public domain last year, allowing filmmakers to explore these cherished characters in unprecedented ways. Director Rhys Frake-Waterfield and producer Scott Jeffrey Chambers, of Jagged Edge Productions, have led the charge in this innovative endeavor.

The inclusion of Rabbit, heffalumps, and woozles in the upcoming sequel introduces a new layer to the franchise. In Milne’s original stories, heffalumps are imagined creatures resembling elephants, while woozles are known for their weasel-like characteristics and a penchant for stealing honey. Their roles in the narrative remain to be seen, but their addition promises to enrich the horror universe with deeper connections to the source material.
