‘Creepy Crawlers’ Set to Infect the Big Screen

Published

Creepy Crawlers

The 90’s brought us some of the most memorable pop culture moments, from television to the craze-y toys. Millennials will remember the Easy-Bake Oven’s strange counter-part, Creepy Crawlers. Fans of the creepy bake oven will soon be treated to a full-length adaptation.

Paramount Players has obtained the rights to Creepy Crawlers, according to Variety. The toy brand, owned by JAKKS Pacific, has seen its fair share of recreations. Originally released in the 60’s as the Creepy Crawlers Thingmaker by Mattel, this beefed up easy bake oven was actually a nightmare come to life. Not only was the hot-plate-like design burning children but the Plasti-Goop was toxic to breathe in.

As years passed, modifications were made to the metal hotplate and other parts. Still, the creepy crawlies died out with the discontinuation of the toy in 1978.

The creeps  were reintroduced in 1992 under Toymax. The hotplate was restructured, the Plasti-Goop was 100% hazard free, and a vast selection of interchangeable plates were created.

There even was a Creepy Crawlers cartoon show, which was produced by Saban Entertainment, the company behind Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers.

However, like every craze, the fad faded over time and the critters went back into hiding.

Neal H. Moritz will produce the feature film with Marc Gurvitz and Toby Ascher. Stephen Berman will also be onboard as an executive producer. Moritz is currently working on the follow-up to his successful Goosebumps adaptation, another beloved 90’s revamp.

Goosebumps: Horrorland will focus on “the scariest place on earth”. You can read up on the release date push back here.

Not much else is known about the film other than it will be “based on the classic toy molds of all sorts of creepy and slimy bugs”.

Creepy Crawlers has been an iconic brand since the 1960’s and we are honored to work with Neal Moritz, Paramount Players, and the Nickelodeon-Viacom Family in bringing it to life on the big screen,” says Stephen Berman, chairman & CEO of JAKKS Pacific. “We, and the studio, envision the property to be developed into a family adventure film in the vein of ‘Jumanji.‘”

Paramount Players are also working on the Are You Afraid of the Dark? movie, which will hit theaters October 2019.

Watch ‘The Burning’ At The Location Where It Was Filmed

Published

on

Fangoria is reporting that fans of the 1981 slasher The Burning will be able to have a screening of the film at the location where it was filmed. The movie is set at Camp Blackfoot which is actually the Stonehaven Nature Preserve in Ransomville, New York.

This ticketed event will take place on August 3. Guests will be able to take a tour of the grounds as well as enjoy some campfire snacks along with the screening of The Burning.

The Burning

The film came out in the early ’80s when teen slashers were being churned out in magnum force. Thanks to Sean S. Cunningham’s Friday the 13th, filmmakers wanted to get in on the low-budget, high-profit movie market and a casket load of these types of films were produced, some better than others.

The Burning is one of the good ones, mostly because of the special effects from Tom Savini who had just come off of his groundbreaking work on Dawn of the Dead and Friday the 13th. He declined to do the sequel because of its illogical premise and instead signed on to do this movie. Also, a young Jason Alexander who would later go on to play George in Seinfeld is a featured player.

Because of its practical gore, The Burning had to be heavily edited before it received an R-rating. The MPAA was under the thumb of protest groups and political bigwigs to censor violent films at the time because slashers were just so graphic and detailed in their gore.

Tickets are $50, and if you want a special t-shirt, that will cost you another $25, You can get all the information by visiting the On Set Cinema webpage.
