The Best Movies on Shudder as Ranked by the Experts

Best Movies on Shudder - Ghostland

If you’ve only recently signed up for the best horror app out there, you’re likely wondering what the best movies on Shudder are. You’ve got hundreds to choose from, but if you only have a few hours to spare, you definitely don’t want to choose a dud. Fortunately, the foremost experts on Shudder have your back.

If you head over to the House of Shudder Facebook group, you’ll find droves of fans discussing the top flicks on the app. There are always a few outliers, but the favorites on the streaming service remain pretty consistent. So without further ado, here are the best movies on Shudder to enjoy tonight.

Incident in a Ghostland (2018)

This one is a bit disturbing, but it’s not so over the top that it can’t be enjoyed. A mother and her two daughters move into a newly-inherited house, and their first night in the new place is interrupted by some seriously diabolical and sick intruders. Check out the trailer:

This film isn’t for the weak of heart, but it’s no doubt one of the best movies on Shudder. Queue up The Office afterward, though, because you might need a bit of help coming down.

A Bluebird in My Heart (2018)

This isn’t your typical horror movie – if it’s horror at all. An ex-con moves to a motel run by a woman who lives there with her daughter. The young girl befriends the reformed convict, and after the two become close, she’s physically assaulted by an acquaintance. Definite trigger warning on this one.

As you might imagine, the ex-con deals with the situation in his own way. This is definitely a gripping film and easily one of the best movies on Shudder if you can get past the whole non-horror thing.

Hell House, LLC (2015)

If you’ve yet to see this found footage classic, it’s the official synopsis that will give you a clear view on what to expect:

“Five years after an unexplained malfunction causes the death of 15 tour-goers and staff on the opening night of a Halloween haunted house tour, a documentary crew travels back to the scene of the tragedy to find out what really happened.”

Even people who don’t enjoy found footage loved this flick. The two follow-up films are also on Shudder, and while many don’t think they’re quite as good, you’ll certainly want to watch to see how the story began and if it ever ends.

Mayhem (2017)

This one has Steven Yeun of The Walking Dead fame, and Joe Bob Briggs covered it on an episode of The Last Drive-In. I’d recommend watching it with Joe Bob since you’ll get to enjoy the film along with Darcy and the greatest redneck drive-in critic out there. Here’s the trailer:

Yeun plays a white collar worker who’s gotten screwed over by his company for the last time. Mere moments after he’s fired, a virus that has a violent effect on the infected ravages its way through his office building. Awesomeness ensues.

Dogs Don’t Wear Pants (2019)

Any conversation involving the best movies on Shudder must now include Dogs Don’t Wear Pants. After losing his wife in an accident, the lead character starts seeking out the service of a dominatrix. There are certainly some cringeworthy moments in the movie – related directly to the sub/dom relationship – but it’s honestly one of the most tragic and healing love stories you’re going to come across.

Just so you know in advance, there’s definitely some (fictional) abuse going on in this film. It’s not anywhere close to the level of Saw or Hostel, though, and the overall story makes these few harsh moments barely noticeable.

3 From Hell (2019)

You might not think that Rob Zombie’s followup to Devil’s Rejects deserves to be on a list of the best movies on Shudder, but the streaming service is one of the few places you’ll find the flick. If Zombie’s stuff isn’t your cup of tea, feel free to scroll past this recommendation. If you enjoyed the other films, though, this one cannot be missed.

One Cut of the Dead (2017)

Is this a movie within a movie, or a movie within a movie within a movie? Listen, just watch the thing. It became an instant favorite on Shudder when it was made available, and when Joe Bob Briggs showed the film, it resulted in one of the most moving closing dialogues in the show’s history.

If you’re not keen on seeing Joe Bob’s take on the film, feel free to watch it on its own. It certainly has earned a place among the best movies on Shudder. You’ll see credits rolling after about 30 minutes, but keep on watching. Things are just getting started.

Daniel Isn’t Real (2019)

You can’t help but love Shudder exclusives, and Daniel Isn’t Real is a great addition to the category. Check out the official synopsis:

“A troubled college freshman, Luke, suffers a violent family trauma. He then resurrects his charismatic childhood imaginary friend Daniel to help him cope, not realizing how dangerous Daniel is.”

A crazed imaginary friend? Don’t worry, it’s nothing like Fight Club. Although, a few scenes may seem reminiscent. Just trust me, though: this is one of the best movies on Shudder. It may not be the greatest exclusive on the app, but it’s definitely worth the watch if you’ve got a meager 100 minutes to spare.

Do You Agree with Our Best Movies on Shudder?

Tracking down the gems on a streaming service packed with awesome horror movies can be tedious. The preceding films consistently get high marks from current subscribers, but there’s undoubtedly hidden awesomeness we have yet to discover. This Horror Film Just Derailed a Record Held by ‘Train to Busan’

Published

on

The South Korean supernatural horror film Exhuma is generating buzz. The star-studded movie is setting records, including the derailment of the country’s former top-grosser, Train to Busan.

Movie success in South Korea is measured by “moviegoers” instead of box office returns, and of this writing, it has garnered over 10 million of them which surpasses the 2016 favorite Train to Busan.

India’s current events publication, Outlook reports, “Train to Busan previously held the record with 11,567,816 viewers, but ‘Exhuma’ has now achieved 11,569,310 viewers, marking a significant feat.”

“What’s also interesting to note is that the film achieved the impressive feat of reaching 7 million moviegoers in less than 16 days of its release, surpassing the milestone four days quicker than 12.12: The Day, which held the title of South Korea’s top-grossing box office hit in 2023.”

Exhuma

Exhuma’s plot isn’t exactly original; a curse is unleashed upon the characters, but people seem to love this trope, and dethroning Train to Busan is no small feat so there has to be some merit to the movie. Here’s the logline: “The process of excavating an ominous grave unleashes dreadful consequences buried underneath.”

It also stars some of East Asia’s biggest stars, including Gong Yoo, Jung Yu-mi, Ma Dong-seok, Kim Su-an, Choi Woo-shik, Ahn So-hee and Kim Eui-sung.

Exhuma

Putting it in Western monetary terms, Exhuma has raked in over $91 million at the worldwide box office since its February 22 release, which is almost as much as Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has earned to date.

Exhuma was released in limited theaters in the United States on March 22. No word yet on when it will make its digital debut.

Watch ‘Immaculate’ At Home Right Now

Published

on

Just when we thought 2024 was going to be a horror movie wasteland, we got a few good ones in succession, Late Night With the Devil and Immaculate. The former will be available on Shudder starting April 19, the latter just had a surprise drop on digital ($19.99) today and will be getting physical on June 11.

The film stars Sydney Sweeney fresh off her success in the rom-com Anyone but You. In Immaculate, she plays a young nun named Cecilia, who travels to Italy to serve in a convent. Once there, she slowly unravels a mystery about the holy place and what role she plays in their methods.

Thanks to word of mouth and some favorable reviews, the movie has earned over $15 million domestically. Sweeney, who also produces, has waited a decade to get the film made. She purchased the rights to the screenplay, reworked it, and made the film we see today.

The movie’s controversial final scene wasn’t in the original screenplay, director Michael Mohan added it later and said, “It is my proudest directorial moment because it is exactly how I pictured it. “

Whether you go out to see it while it’s still in theaters or rent it from the convenience of your couch, let us know what you think of Immaculate and the controversy surrounding it.

Politician Spooked By ‘First Omen’ Promo Mailer Calls Police

Published

on

Incredibly, what some people thought they would get with an Omen prequel turned out to be better than anticipated. Maybe it’s partly due to a good PR campaign. Maybe not. At least it wasn’t for a pro-choice Missouri politician and film blogger Amanda Taylor who received a suspicious mailer from the studio ahead of The First Omen’s theatrical release.

Taylor, a Democrat running for Missouri’s House of Representatives, must be on Disney’s PR list because she received some eerie promo merch from the studio to publicize The First Omen, a direct prequel to the 1975 original. Usually, a good mailer is supposed to pique your interest in a film not send you running to the phone to call the police.

According to THR, Taylor opened the package and inside were disturbing children’s drawings related to the film that freaked her out. It’s understandable; being a female politician against abortion it’s no telling what kind of threatening hate mail you’re going to get or what might be construed as a threat.

“I was freaking out. My husband touched it, so I’m screaming at him to wash his hands,” Taylor told THR.

Marshall Weinbaum, who does Disney’s public relations campaigns says he got the idea for the cryptic letters because in the movie, “there are these creepy drawings of little girls with their faces crossed out, so I got this idea to print them out and mail them to the press.”

The studio, maybe realizing the idea wasn’t their best move, sent out a follow-up letter explaining that it was all in good fun to promote The First Omen. “Most people had fun with it,” adds Weinbaum.

While we can understand her initial shock and concern being a politician running on a controversial ticket, we have to wonder as a film enthusiast, why she wouldn’t recognize a crazy PR stunt.

Perhaps in this day and age, you can’t be too careful.
