There was a time in horror movie history when George Romero was set to direct a feature adaption of the game Resident Evil, Romero wrote a script and everything.
Tonight the people over at Pod And The Pendulum are taking that script and doing a table reading of it live.
Back in 1998, the zombie master himself was hired by game developer Capcom to direct a commercial for Resident Evil 2, aka Biohazard 2. Brad Renfro and Adrienne Frantz starred in the 30-second spot (watch below).
Sony was so impressed with the ad they asked Romero to write and direct the movie. This was a gleeful moment for the game’s creator who was a Romero enthusiast.
“The game’s designer, Shinji Mikami, was a big fan of Romero, and it showed,” Jamie Russell, author of Book of the Dead: The Complete History of Zombie Cinema, said. “It was a game that leant heavily on cinematic camera angles and atmosphere.”
Sadly, Sony and Capcom were brutal in their review of Romero’s script saying bluntly, “it wasn’t good.” They fired him and went with Paul W.S. Anderson’s action-packed opus instead. Still, people wonder what could have been? How bad was Romero’s vision of Racoon City?
Well now is your chance to find out as the Pod And The Pendulum podcast is putting it to the test on April 22, 2020.
The live reading of Romero’s script will premiere on YouTube at 7 pm EST/4 pm PST. Click HERE to listen.
