Ed Wood’s epically bad Plan 9 From Outer Space is taking the spotlight in the upcoming Turner Classic Movies festival with a virtual table read.
Bob Odenkirk, Laraine Newman, Bobcat Goldthwait, David Koechner, and Oscar Nuñez are among the actors taking part in the special event featuring a script adapted by Dana Gould that can be seen on TCM on May 7, 2021 at 5 pm PDT.
Plan 9 From Outer Space is largely considered one of the worst films ever made while simultaneously being one of the most popular movies Ed Wood ever produced.
It concerns a group of extraterrestrials who discover that humans are creating a weapon with the potential to destroy the entire universe. In a bid to stop the humans, they enact “Plan 9,” which involves raising the dead as ghouls. They hope that in the chaos, humans will actually take the time to listen to them and stop their destructive path.
The film has a solid cult following, largely thanks to its terrible special effects, over the top dialogue, and its inclusion of Bela Lugosi and Maila Nurmi aka television host Vampira in its cast. It was Lugosi’s final film, though in truth his appearance was cobbled together from footage he and Wood had shot together for other projects. When it came time to make Plan 9 From Outer Space, Wood used that footage to have a “name” actor in his film.
The TCM Classic Film Festival will take place virtually for the second year in a row running from May 6-9, 2021 on both TCM and on the TCM Hub on HBO Max. For more information on the festival and to see which films will be featured on each platform, CLICK HERE.
