Showtime is set to break new ground with a sequel to its hit series Penny Dreadful.
Fans of the original series were shocked when the series suddenly ended after three seasons having told the initial story they had planned with many of its loyal fans clamoring for more.
According to Deadline, the new series, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, will tell a brand new story set in Los Angeles in 1938 “deeply infused in Mexican-American folklore and social tension.”
John Logan, who wrote, directed and produced the first series, will return in the same capacity on its new incarnation and will by joined by Michael Aguilar as well as returning executive producers Sam Mendes and Pippa Harris.
Logan explained that the new series will include a “social consciousness and historical awareness” that was not present in the first series. He also teased that the series will center on a conflict between Santa Muerte and allies of the Devil.
For those unfamiliar, Nuestra Señora de la Santa Muerte–Our Lady of Holy Death, commonly shortened to Santa Muerte is the physical incarnation of death and the second most popular saint in Mexico having attained the level of a Goddess-like being with 10 to 12 million adherents worldwide.
The historical backdrop and layers of racial tension are sure to make the series a super-charged, supernatural event that loyal Dreadfuls won’t want to miss.
The new series is set to start filming in 2019. Check out the full official artwork for Penny Dreadful: City of Angels below and stay tuned to iHorror for all the latest updates!
