One good dark turn deserves another. Recently, there have been a lot of darker, grittier takes on classic characters. These tend to aim for an R rating and to turn up the outrage factor. Now Paul Rubens wants to bring that amount of darkness into the world of Pee-Wee Herman.
Not long ago, Jean-Claude Van Damme did a similar thing with JCVD. The film blurred the lines of his real life and took some turns both dramatic and comedic. But, in a dark vein. Paul Rubens, spoke to Hollywood Reporter and said that his dark take would be in line with a “Valley of the Dolls Pee-Wee Herman Movie.”
Rubens describes the plot as seeing Pee-Wee break out of prison, find fame in film and go through the ringer with drugs, alcohol, etc… This would all lead to a complete breakdown that ends in the hospital where he would even receive shock treatments.
He even reached out to The Safdie Brothers (Uncut Gems, Good Time) to gauge their interest in taking on the project. Rubens says that the brothers were at this time considering the project.
It’s a big and crazy idea. But, Ruben’s career mirrors that craziness. I would personally love to see this, because why not? Rubens is most known for his role as Pee-Wee but the comedian has dark roots in his career that really do go through the gambit.
What do you guys think? Would you go see a dark take on Pee-Wee Herman?
