It’s been a long road for James Cameron’s produced adaptation of the manga series Battle Angel Alita. A road longer than 15 years! After a few delays, the film directed by Robert Rodriguez is finally set to be released on Valentine’s day, 2019 and anticipation is high. And what better way to promote the movie than by giving fans the chance to see the futuristic world of Alita first-hand!
Passport to Iron City is a full immersion gaming experience where you and a team enter the dystopic Iron City to explore, play games, and potentially win! Opened on location in Los Angeles, New York City, and Austin, the games are produced by iam8bit and feature sets, props, and costumes like those scene in the Alita movie. Having been a fan of the manga series and anime for years, I jumped at the chance to jump into the setting of Alita. Starting things off at one of the signature locations of the story, Bar Kansas. A lobby where you can hang out with your friends, meet your new team-mates, and even buy a themed beverage.
The game operates much like an escape room, though you’re not really trapped. Your team must accomplish a series of challenges set at a number of booths in the area. Such as identifying criminals on a surveillance screen and searching for valuable parts in a scrap heap. Ending the game with a potential gamble on the deadly game of motorball!
Overall, the experience was a lot of fun and really brought the elements of Alita: Battle Angel to life! For newcomers, it will give them an inside look of the future-imperfect society of Iron City. Filled with merchants, Hunter-Warriors, gambling, and criminals. If you’re interested in Alita or just want to have a fun time out with some friends, get your passport to Iron City!
