Oren Peli became one of the horror genre’s biggest success stories nearly a decade ago with the release of Paranormal Activity, which has spawned countless sequels and copycats in the eight years since its theatrical debut. Peli has mostly been producing since then, with films like Insidious and The Lords of Salem on his resume.
But what you may not know about Oren Peli is that he actually directed a film shortly after making Paranormal Activity, titled Area 51. Shooting began on Peli’s found footage follow-up way back in 2009, and very little has been heard since then.
Last we heard, Peli was still tinkering with the film’s final edit, and earlier this month producer Jason Blum confirmed that it was soon headed our way. Today Blumhouse broke some big news on Twitter, announcing that Area 51 will be hitting VOD outlets and Alamo Drafthouse theaters on May 15th.
In the film, three young conspiracy theorists attempt to uncover the mysteries of Area 51, the government’s top secret location rumored to have hosted encounters with alien beings. What they find at this hidden facility exposes horrifying, unimaginable secrets. Now you can experience their harrowing adventure in this footage pieced together from documentation of these chilling events.
