Overlord was perhaps one of the more underrated genre movies to come out in 2018, which is unfortunate since it was such a great action horror movie. So I am ecstatic that it’ll have another chance to connect with audiences with the brand new 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray!
Produced by J.J. Abrams and directed by Julius Avery, the story set just before World War II’s D-Day follows a platoon of American GIs sent behind enemy lines with the mission of destroying a Nazi radio tower set above a church. Only to discover to their horror that the Nazis have also been working on inhumane and horrifying experiments at the same base, with even more horrifying results…
The transfer of Overlord from theatrical to 4K is simply stunning. The imagery and colors have crystal clarity and the sounds are incredibly defined. The opening scene of the platoon being flown to their destination and having to parachute through enemy fire is just as immersive in 4K as it was in the movie theater.
The special features are pretty good, though there’s only one: a nearly hour long elaborate behind the scenes documentary covering the development and production of Overlord featuring interviews with crew like J.J. Abrams and Julius Avery as well as cast members such as lead Jovan Adepo who plays Private Ed Boyce. It’s a fascinating look into the making of this period horror war movie, and always fun to loo behind the curtain and see what was practical or digital FX, there being a great balance between the two. Still, it unfortunately lacks other usual special feature staples like a director/cast commentary or additional interviews.
Overall, the presentation on Overlord in 4K is impressive especially if you own a state-of-the-art TV and sound system. While the special features could have had more, there’s still plenty to dig through. So, if you missed the chance to see Overlord in theaters, take this home and give it a watch!
Overlord is available on 4K Ultra HD, Blu Ray, DVD, and Digital February 19th, 2019.
