Nostalgia has been big business in recent years, and no decade has been re-animated and cashed in on more than the 1980s. But now that us ’90s kids are starting to get older, and look back fondly on those formative years, so too is that decade experiencing a modern day revival.
As reported by Entertainment Weekly, Nickelodeon is getting in on the nostalgic fun by launching a project called The Splat, which is being described as an experiment that will bring back many of the classic shows ’90s kids grew up watching – original episodes, rather than new ones.
Launching October 5th, with the first block of programming airing on TeenNick, The Splat will see the television returns of shows like Ren & Stimpy, Salute Your Shorts, and All That, and most exciting of all, Are You Afraid of the Dark? is coming back as part of the new “destination” network.
Originally airing from 1990 through 1996, with a brief revival from 1999-2000, Are You Afraid of the Dark? was an anthology series that told various different horror stories around a campfire. For many fans, it served as an early introduction to the genre, much like R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps books.
As if that wasn’t enough to get you excited about The Splat, the TV block will also include NEW EPISODES of Nick or Treat, just in time for Halloween. The week of Oct. 26, callers can once again phone in and make their way down a computer-animated neighborhood in the hopes of winning prizes.
Long live the ’90s!
