It’s been a little over a year since Owen Egerton entered the (horror) film world with his psychological-thriller entry Follow. Currently, Egerton has teamed up with Rooster Teeth Productions (Lazer Team, RWBY, Red Vs Blue) to throw one HELL of a premier party at SXSW (South by Southwest).

Blood Fest, written and directed by Egerton, stars Zachary Levi (Tangled and Thor Ragnarok), Jacob Batalon (Spiderman Homecoming), Seychelle Gabriel (Falling Skies, The Spirit, and The Legend of Kora), and Tate Donovan (Argo and Hercules). The plot synopsis (as seen on IMDB) is detailed as follows:

“Fans flock to a festival celebrating the most iconic horror movies, only to discover that the charismatic showman behind the event has a diabolical agenda.

As festival attendees start dying off, three teenagers – more schooled in horror-film cliches than practical knowledge about neutralizing psycho killers – must band together and battle through various madmen and monstrosities to survive.” Blood Fest’s trailer also contains horror-meta quotes such as, “As a virgin, I probably have a fighting chance.”

As well as references to the rules of Blood Fest. With a story revolving around characters well versed in the knowledge of the horror-genre, and iconic horror monsters (clowns, vampires, killers masked as pigs, zombies, etc.), it would seem like Blood Fest may promise viewers a similar “self-aware” horror experience in the vein of Scream and/or Cabin in the Woods, combined with the high intensity violence and dark comedy as a Sam Raimi or Rob Zombie film.

Either way, it’s an interesting direction for Rooster Teeth Productions to pursue considering their light hearted sci-fi and anime background, but the film looks promising! Anyone who is planning to attend SXSW this year can catch the films premier on March 9th, with the screening being from 11:55pm to 1:27am. Further details about the screening and the event can be found here.
