Emma Stone gets really emo in the new trailer for Disney’s Cruella which dropped today. As you will see below, since this an origin story, no coat made of cute Dalmation puppies was used. What we do get is an introduction to one of Disney’s most psychotic villains complete with black and white hair and what appears to be an act of arson.
Is this DC or Disney?
The film is set in 1970s London and centers around a young con woman named Estella (Stone). She’s an intelligent lass who is at ease among the punk rock crowd of the time and has dreams of designing clothes whatever the cost.
“She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets,” explains the press release. “One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar® winner Emma Thompson (Howards End, Sense & Sensibility). But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable, and revenge-bent Cruella?”
Cruella is directed by Craig Gillespie (Fright Night (2011), I Tonya). It was produced by Andrew Gunn (Freaky Friday), Marc Platt (Mary Poppins Returns) and Kristin Burr (Christopher Robin).
Emma Stone, Michelle Wright, Jared LeBoff and Glenn Close serve as executive producers. Two-time Oscar®- winning costume designer Jenny Beavan (Mad Max: Fury Road, A Room with a View) creates dazzling and imaginative costumes, which take on a life of their own.
The film will be releasing on May 28, 2021. No word if it will stream concurrently on Disney+.
