David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick took a few minutes out of his busy schedule promoting Aquaman this week to bring fans up to date on the possibility of rebooting of New Line’s A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Johnson-McGoldrick, whose previous writing credits include not only James Wan’s Aquaman but also Orphan and The Conjuring 2, told GameStop that the reboot is still happening, but that “nothing is percolating just yet.”

In fact, the screenwriter says that he’s currently focused on writing The Conjuring 3, but that a Nightmare reboot is never far from the minds of the creators at New Line.

The last attempt at rebooting the franchise hit theaters in 2010 starring Jackie Earle Haley to, let’s say, less than stellar results with many pointing at Haley’s performance as the reason the film failed.

While fans were quick to jump on the hate-wagon for that particular reboot, there are a host of filmmakers and fans who love the franchise and would be eager to see a the franchise resurrected the right way.

In fact, in recent years, indie filmmakers have jumped on the bandwagon, throwing their names into the hat for a chance to helm a new film.

Notably, Florida-based director Domonic Smith wowed online audiences with not one but three “trailers” for a proposed Nightmare: Return to Elm Street, which not only garnered millions of view on YouTube but also caught the attention of franchise alum.

With the success of David Gordon Green’s 2018 Halloween which retconned the series back to the original film, and with news that SpringHill Entertainment intends to helm a reboot of Friday the 13th, can another attempt at A Nightmare on Elm Street really be that much of a stretch?

We think not, and even though Johnson-McGoldrick can’t give us a timeline at the moment, there’s certainly enough fans who’d be interested, especially if Robert Englund were to jump on board. The actor and fan favorite said earlier this year that he might be interested in donning the glove one more time.

And maybe, just maybe, Smith might get that chance after all.
