Darren Aronofsky’s new film mother! has been getting some polarizing reviews, and the director seems to be loving it. Playing up the controversy for the film, a new poster has been revealing on Friday to further fan the flames. With statements such as “some people are going to f–king hate this movie” and billing it as “The most controversial movie in years”, Paramount has decided to drive the point home that you’ll either love or hate this movie.
The new poster for the film shows a bruised Jennifer Larence coupled with these statements and more. The poster was presented on Reddit during an AMA with the film’s director, which a fan of the movie may be interested in reading – but I stress the term “may”, because Aronofsky’s responses are either a) typical for the director, and a fan will appreciate them, or b) vague and pretentious, able to aggravate a casual fan of a movie such as mother!.
Aronofsky seems to be dealing with the backlash to this film very well. In response to a Redditor’s question as to how he is dealing with it, the director responded by saying:
we always knew when we made this movie that it was a strong cocktail. i think the response is exactly what we thought it would be.
Basically, it was envisioned from the start to polarize audiences. It’s very surprising, then, that Paramount took on a project such as this. It’s either a victory for arthouse films or a slap in the face of conventional horror fans – all depending on how you see the film.
And if you haven’t gotten around to seeing it yet, maybe you should. After all, you want to be able to weigh in on this controversy, don’t you? Let us know what you thought of the film in the comments. Whether you loved it or hated it, let the world know why.
