New Pinhead Actor Discusses Taking Over the Role

Published

on

As much as us Hellraiser fans might not like it, Dimension Films is soon set to offer up yet another new direct to video Hellraiser sequel, entitled Hellraiser: Judgment.

Similar to the circumstances that resulted in the creation of 2011’s absolutely abysmal Hellraiser: Revelations, Dimension opted to make Judgment primarily to hold onto the rights to the Hellraiser franchise, despite seemingly having no idea what they actually want to do with it in the future.

Still, while that naturally gives many fans pause when it comes to giving Judgment a chance, there are still many Hellraiser devotees willing to sit down and see where this new sequel takes them.

Thankfully, Revelations actor Stephan Smith Collins – the first actor to ever play Pinhead besides genre icon Doug Bradley – hasn’t been brought back, and neither has that film’s director Victor Garcia. Taking over the helm is noted effects man – and huge Hellraiser fan – Gary J. Tunnicliffe.

While Tunnicliffe did write Revelations, it was one of his first feature screenplays, and there’s no reason to believe he might not have learned from his prior mistakes.

Taking over the Pinhead role is actor Paul T. Taylor, who recently spoke to the Dallas Observer about what it was like to make Judgment, and the challenges of trying to live up to Bradley:

Hellraiser Lament Configuration

It was the coolest thing that’s ever happened to me in my life. Being on that set was the coolest thing I’ve ever done. [Pinhead] was always my favorite horror icon because he was the most twisted and intelligent in my mind. And I love the fetish wear, and it’s just wrong. He’s just so wrong. Chains on hooks? That’s so gruesome and grotesque. Clive Barker’s mind is just so twisted.

I had a couple of months to work on it before we shot, and I stayed home as much as possible with very few lights on while I was learning the lines. I live in South Oak Cliff in kind of a bad neighborhood, and I would just walk around like a badass basically. [I knew] that I needed to honor the Pinhead that everyone loved already, the Doug Bradley Pinhead.

It is a little daunting. I’ve read some comments from the fans who are gonna hate me as Pinhead no matter what, but many of them are smart enough and cool enough to say, ‘I’m not gonna judge until I see Paul T. Taylor play Pinhead,’ and, ‘He’s not Doug Bradley but I’m gonna give him a chance.’

If nothing else, Taylor’s enthusiasm for both the Pinhead character and overall Hellraiser mythos is quite apparent, and someone with that much love for the franchise is likely to give the part his all.

For the sake of the long-suffering Hellraiser series, here’s hoping Judgment ends up greatly surpassing the mess that was Revelations. None of us are expecting a Hellraiser II or III quality sequel here, but the least Dimension could give us is another direct to video effort on the level of the underrated Inferno.

A new trailer for the movie formerly known as Pussy Island just dropped and it has us intrigued. Now with the more restrained title, Blink Twice, this  Zoë Kravitz-directed black comedy is set to land in theaters on August 23.

The film is packed with stars including Channing Tatum, Naomi Ackie, Alia Shawkat, Simon Rex, Adria Arjona, Haley Joel Osment, Christian Slater, Kyle MacLachlan, and Geena Davis.

The trailer feels like a Benoit Blanc mystery; people are invited to a secluded location and disappear one by one, leaving one guest to figure out what is going on.

In the film, a billionaire named Slater King (Channing Tatum) invites a waitress named Frida (Naomi Ackie) to his private island, “It’s paradise.
