German writer/producer/directors Baran Bo Odar and Jantje Friese have a new series coming to Netflix titled 1899. The two previous created the hit series Dark for the streaming platform.
The series is set to begin filming in Spring 2021 and will feature a multi-lingual story with English as its predominant language. 1899 follows a migrant ship sailing from London to New York. Along the way, they find a similar ship adrift whereupon their journey becomes a living nightmare.
Emily Beecham who will appear in the upcoming Disney+ film Cruella is the first cast member announced for the project.
“What really made us connect to this idea was the concept of having a truly European show with a mixed cast from different countries. At its heart is the question of what unites us and what divides us. And how fear can be a trigger for the latter,” the showrunners said in a statement to Deadline.
Odar and Friese were the first European filmmakers to strike an overall deal with Netflix. Their first outing, the twisting science-fiction/fantasy series Dark, gained critical acclaim with its final season rating 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Its complex narrative kept viewers guessing from episode one to its final bow in June of 2020.
All eyes will be on them as they prepare the admittedly ambitious 1899 for broadcast, and iHorror will keep you posted on new details as they become available.
