New ‘Dracula’ Movie in Development at Universal

Hot on the heels of the success of Leigh Whannell’s re-imagining of The Invisible Man, Blumhouse and Universal are in talks to create a new version of Dracula, but they are not calling this an extended universe.

That idea was abandoned after the abysmal performance of The Mummy starring Tom Cruise back in 2017 when the studio had toyed with the idea of creating a series of films where all of their famous monster properties existed in the same world.

Instead, the studio will focus on standalone films and Dracula seems an excellent place to start.

Director Karyn Kusama is attached to direct the new version of Dracula which, like The Invisible Man, will be set in our modern world rather than being a period piece. Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay, who previously with Kusama on both Destroyer and The Invitation, will write the script for the new project.

The announcement of the film follows similar news that James Wan would be tackling one of the classic movie monsters, as well.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a source close to the projects says that they are no longer interested in tying this universe together and instead will focus on storytelling and that “It’s a’ best idea wins’ approach.”

There have numerous iterations of all of the classic Universal Monsters over the years so it will be interesting to see what new direction this particular version will take.

iHorror will keep you posted on all the latest news on Dracula and the rest of the Universal Monsters as they become available.
