Who doesn’t love a good creature feature? I sure do, and I’m willing to bet most of you reading this feel the same way. One of my favorite monster-based series is Critters, which produced four films in the 1980s and 1990s.
The original 1986 Critters movie is one of the most fun of its decade in my opinion, and 1988 sequel The Main Course is also a great time. Critters 3 and 4 admittedly aren’t that good, but neither is horrifically bad either.
Earlier this year, it was announced that Verizon’s upstart go90 streaming platform would play host to Critters: A New Binge, a web series that would serve as a loosely connected sequel to the prior four entries.
Unfortunately, go90 has since been abandoned, and it remains to be seen if A New Binge will ever see the light of day. Thankfully, Critters isn’t dead, as it was revealed in October that Syfy was planning to produce a new film.
Now, a new listing on Production Weekly reveals that a Critters film is set to begin filming in South Africa in January 2019. It’s unclear what the movie will be about, or if it will be a reboot of or sequel to the established series.
While many fans might want to scoff at the idea of a Syfy-produced Critters movie, they just recently made Leprechaun Returns, which by almost all accounts succeeds in capturing the playful spirit of that franchise.
