Unleashed earlier this summer, Pokemon Go has absolutely taken the world by storm, encouraging both children and adults alike to venture out of their homes and capture characters that can only be seen through the lens of a smart phone. It’s called augmented reality, and if you’ve played Pokemon Go and wished that there was a version specifically geared towards horror fans, well, your
prayers nightmares have been answered.
Announced and fan-funded last year, before Pokemon Go was even announced, the upcoming app game Night Terrors literally turns your home into a horror movie, and it promises to be the scariest experience this side of full-on virtual reality. Night Terrors is described as a highly immersive, photorealistic, augmented reality survival horror game, with gameplay taking place at home, after dark, with the lights off and your headphones on.
Available on your smart phone and even Apple Watch – the latter of which keeps track of your heartbeat and gets more intense the less scared you seem to be! – Night Terrors is going to be a completely personalized experience, with frightening ghosts and monsters popping up in your home and even at points calling out to you by name. Unlike Pokemon Go, you don’t actually collect them, but they’re damn sure out to collect your soul.
“Think about a system that understands where you are in your environment, and is able to exploit that information in order to create an unbelievable augmented reality experience,” said the game’s developers. “Think about playing a game where the storyline involves you. Consider a future full of movies you star in, experiences that seem real, and scenarios, in our case, that are freakishly frightening. This is in your house. This is in your apartment. This is in your environment.”
Night Terrors is expected to be rolled out Halloween 2016.
