Last year, Spike TV’s version of The Mist arrived, then crashed and burned. A critical disaster, The Mist was canceled after a single season. However, the same cannot be said for Audience Network’s Mr. Mercedes, which also premiered last year.
Based on Stephen King’s 2014 novel, Mr. Mercedes stars Brendan Gleeson (28 Days Later) and Harry Treadaway (Penny Dreadful). Gleeson plays grizzled detective Bill Hodges, the veteran cop on the trail of Treadaway’s Brady Hartsfield, the titular brutal serial killer.
Season 1 earned rave reviews from critics, and was also heavily championed by King himself. Now, Deadline reports that Mr. Mercedes season 2 will premiere on August 22nd. To watch it, you’ll need Audience Network, which is only available on DirecTV and AT&T U-Verse.
Gleeson and Treadaway both return for season 2, alongside new cast members Tessa Ferrer (Insidious: The Last Key) and Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire). Season 2 will incorporate elements from King’s sequel books, Finders Keepers and End of Watch.
While it’s kind of annoying that Mr. Mercedes is only available to such a limited subset of viewers, such is the fragmented entertainment world we currently occupy, in which each and every network and studio seeks to create original content exclusive to their platform.
