As we move into 2015, I cannot help to be excited about all of the upcoming horror films, their sequels, and remakes. One horror film that was near the top of my list is [REC] 4: Apocalypse. It has been said this will be the final film in the Spanish franchise. [REC] 4 is proving to be unique because this chapter does not use the found-footage approach and is a direct sequel to [REC 2]. However, this film does contain a character from [REC] 3 in it. [REC] 4 brings back Angela Vidal (Manuela Velasco) who survived the events from the first two films. Jaume Balagueró returns to the director’s chair to create an action packed traditional bloody horror film.
In this installment, Angela is rescued from the zombie-infested apartments and is transported to a ship that is far off into the ocean. Angela awakens and believes she was saved, but is stricken with fear when she realizes this is not the case. Angela, along with the other survivors are now quarantined. The military is determined to understand and control the virus. Scientist begin experimentation with the dangerous virus. The mayhem begins when a contaminated monkey is set free, and the deadly outbreak spreads throughout the ship. It appears that whatever is living inside Angela may provide a retrovirus and a high chance of everyone’s survival. Not to fear zombie fans, you will get your fair share!
The characters in the film are enjoyable, and I felt sympathetic towards their challenges. It was fantastic to see the return of character Angela Vidal, even though her character was not as strong as portrayed in the original film. The strong makeup effects and entertaining story line surely compensate for the falling out from the found footage trend. The ship in the middle of the ocean was a wise choice for the setting of this film. Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, only to stay and fight. [REC] 4 is my favorite in the franchise and lived up to my expectations.
[REC] 4: Apocalypse is now in select theaters and VOD.
