Considering the enduring, decades-long popularity of the Fatality-focused video game series, it could be argued that Hollywood is long overdue for another attempt at translating Mortal Kombat to the world of film. Especially since they love remakes.
In Mortal Kombat’s case though, a movie reboot is justified. While many people like the 1995 film, it was limited in what it could adapt by its PG-13 rating. And of course, 1997’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation was arguably one of the worst sequels ever.
As is now well-known, James Wan is producing this new take on Mortal Kombat, and writer Greg Russo promises a more game-accurate adaptation. The film is set for release on March 5th, 2021, and now THR brings us some new casting information.
Ludi Lin, of the recent Power Rangers film and the Black Mirror episode “Striking Vipers,” is playing Liu Kang. Tadanobu Asano, who played the small role of Hogun in the Thor movies, is playing Raiden, and Supergirl’s Mechad Brooks is playing Jax.
Last but not least, newcomer Sisi Stringer will play Kitana’s evil twin Mileena. They join the already cast Joe Taslim (The Raid: Redemption) as frozen fighter Sub-Zero. As expected, it looks like this movie will sport quite the packed roster of characters.
