The James Wan produced and Simon McQuoid directed upcoming Mortal Kombat film is high on our most anticipated films. We have reported a ton about this one. Overall the consensus is that the film will be very loyal to the source material. This extends to the very hard R rating that it has under its belt and the cast of characters. Now we know that the film will focus on two huge names in the Mortal Kombat universe.
Scorpion and Sub-Zero have long been fan favorites. The very cool ninjas are known for their powers of fire and ice. Last year’s animated film Mortal Kombat: Scorpion’s Revenge focused on the rival between the two ninjas. The rivalry went all the way back to their beginnings and focused on an intense backstory of revenge.
Director McQuoid went into details with Entertainment Weekly that said he will open the film with an established rivalry between Scorpion and Sub-Zero similar to the story of Scorpion’s Revenge. Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada) and Sub-Zero’s (Joe Taslim) will again be mortal enemies.
Details were dropped over the weekend that pointed to a new character named Cole Young (Lewis Tan). This will be the character that brings us as an audience into Mortal Kombat. Now much is known about how Young will connect to Scorpion and Sub-Zero. However, McQuoid told EW that Young will have a blood relation to the past. Perhaps, that means he is related to one of the ninja assassins.
Mortal Kombat is set to hit theaters April 16.
