We’re all familiar with it, we’ve all listened to it countless times and yes, we’ve probably all even danced to it – even if several overflowing glasses of Halloween punch were required to get us in the mood to show our stuff.

I’m of course talking about the iconic ‘Monster Mash,’ a song that first made its mark on pop culture way back in 1962. The late Bobby “Boris” Pickett is the man responsible for the original version of the song, and to say the times have changed since the song was written would quite frankly be the understatement of the year.

The horror genre has evolved a whole lot in the past 50 years, and the family-friendly monsters of old have been all but replaced by brutal killers who don’t exactly fit in with the likes of the Wolfman, the Mummy and Frankenstein’s monster. Our current crop of icons crack jokes and disembowel their victims in increasingly horrifying ways, ways that would probably make ole Boris throw up in his mouth a little.

Needless to say, it was probably time for the ‘Monster Mash’ to get a modern a day makeover, and that’s precisely what the folks over on YouTube channel Barely Political have just done. Featuring the likes of Freddy, Jason, Michael Myers and Hannibal, this aint your momma’s ‘Monster Mash,’ to say the very least.

Check out the brilliant video for the updated song below, which is as laugh out loud funny as it is an interesting commentary on the current state of the genre. Oh how the times have changed!
