I got some extra special news for you maniacs today. The long awaited Maniac Cop remake finally got the green light, according to a report from Variety and boy am I excited.
Before you guys decapitate me in the comments, I do want to say that, I am normally usually one-hundred percent against remakes. But the guys involved in this particular rehash are the kind of thing you are going to want to dance a jig to.
Turns out William Lustig, Nicholas Winding Refn and John Hyams are the combo loco behind this production. Refn and Lustig is on board as producer with Hyams directing.
Hyams is known for his impressively kick ass Universal Solider, entries. The dude is really good with brutality and action. Add to that a guy like Refn and his ability to create things like The Neon Demon, and we have ourselves some cult movie alchemy.
The original William Lustig directed trilogy featured Matt Cordell (Robert Z’Dar) as a dude dressed as a cop going around killing the hell out of folks in New York.
The film is being described as not a pure horror remake, but more of an action-thriller. This film will follow a police officer who investigates a string of murders by a maniac of a police officer.
With all these guys involved and Lustig returning to produce in some capacity, gives me a lot of hope for what we will get out of this remake.
What do you guys think? Is it time for a revisit to Maniac Cop? Does having Lustig on board make this news more interesting? Let us know in the comments below.
