Whether it be in theaters or on TV, there’s definitely been a lot of great horror content for fans to partake of in 2018. One of my personal favorites so far has been Mandy, which casts Nicolas Cage as a grieving husband who embarks on a murderous rampage of revenge.
Of course, the people Cage’s character – named Red – is out to kill totally have it coming, as they’re members of the psychotic cult that killed his wife, the titular Mandy. Fueled by a drug that makes him nearly impervious to pain, Red takes no prisoners, and it’s quite glorious.
Also glorious is the film itself, both visually and aurally, fueled by an amazing score by the late Jóhann Jóhannsson, and some supremely psychedelic imagery that often borders on the nightmarish. So, with Mandy garnering massive acclaim, could a sequel happen?
Director Panos Cosmatos was recently asked just that during an interview with IndieWire, and while he isn’t sure he wants to go that route with the film, he did reveal an absolutely awesome sounding idea for what such a sequel might involve. Three words: Cage vs. Nazis.
“I don’t know if I’m a sequels kind of person. I prefer each film to have its own unique identity. When I was writing the film, to amuse myself, I imagined a sequel that took place with Red Miller fighting Nazi punks in a bombed-out city. I don’t know if that would ever happen, but it’s a fun thought.”
Yes, Mr. Cosmatos, that is indeed a fun thought, if by fun you mean something I would pay money to see the moment it was released. While it doesn’t sound at all like a certainty, there are definitely lots of Mandy fans who would love for this idea to become a reality.
