One of this year’s best genre movies hits blu-ray and DVD today as the cinemadness that is Mandy is unleashed. Perhaps my favorite movie of the yearMandy had a limited but high-demand theatrical release starting last month before hitting digital and VOD, and at long last for collectors and physical media fans, the blu-ray/DVD is out and is well worth the wait.

Mandy follows Red Miller (Nicolas Cage) a lumberjack with a shaky past that’s settled with Mandy Bloom (Andrea Riseborough) in the Shadow Mountains of California. They lead a loving, comfortable life together until Mandy catches the mad eye of cult leader Jeremiah Sand (Linus Roache) and his group of fanatics. After being attacked, Red declares a bloody and berserk vengeance against those who wronged him and the love of his life.

The transfer looks incredible on blu-ray, not diminished in any way. As visceral and mindbending as ever on the small screen as it was on the big screen. The big draw for the blu-ray/DVD is definitely the special features. No commentary, but there is a detailed behind the scenes documentary of sorts as well as several deleted and extended scenes.

The documentary on the origins and making of Mandy is worth the price alone. Featuring interviews with director Panos Cosmatos, stars Nicolas Cage, Linus Roache, and even producer Elijah Wood among others. It doesn’t necessarily clarify mysteries or anything but it is fascinating to hear how the project came together. One particular revelation being that Nicolas Cage was originally approached to play Jeremiah Sand rather than Red Miller! Either way, a must-watch for fans.

The deleted and extended scenes are interesting to watch after seeing the film. The reel includes a scene of Red being harassed by an obnoxious cop at a gas station, Jeremiah Sand having a on-on-one talk with his devoted Brother Swan, and the grand jewel of them all: The complete, unedited Cheddar Goblin commercial!

If you’re a fan of the film, or want to see what the chainsaw related buzz has been all about, I recommend checking out the blu-ray/DVD release of Mandy and see for yourself!
