Tim Miller and James Cameron are looking to return the Terminator franchise to its former glory, and it appears they’re off to a great start. Variety broke the news today that Mackenzie Davis is in negotiations to take on a starring role in the next Terminator reboot.

Linda Hamilton will reprise her role as Sarah Connor in the new film, which is said to thankfully ignore every sequel after Terminator 2: Judgment Day. James Cameron mentioned last year during a THR interview the role Davis could potentially fill will be at the center of the story.

“We’re starting a search for an 18-something woman to be the new centerpiece of the new story. We will fold time. We will have characters from the future and the present. There will be mostly new characters but we’ll have Arnold and Linda’s characters to anchor it,” said Cameron.

Tim Miller is set to direct the new film, while James Cameron and Skydance’s David Ellison are producers. The three worked together to script the film, and Billy Ray is said to be making refinements. Plot details have been kept close to the chest.

Davis’ past roles include Mariette from Blade Runner 2049, Cameron Howe in Halt and Catch Fire, and Yorkie in Black Mirror.

The Terminator franchise has struggled ever since Cameron walked away upon completing T2. Terminator: Genisys brought the films to a new low by regurgitating memorable scenes from Cameron’s movies, and creating a needlessly convoluted timeline. However, this sequel feels different with Cameron and Miller overseeing the project. What this franchise has lacked since Cameron left is a passion for the material, and interviews with Cameron and Miller show their determination to get it right.

What do you think of Davis being cast in the new Terminator? Who else would you like to star in the film? I personally think Sebastian Stan from Captain America: The Winter Soldier would make a hell of an adult John Connor.
