A new teaser trailer has been released for Lords of Chaos, from writer/director Jonas Åkerlund (Spun, the upcoming Polar). The film will tell the real-life story of how the 1990s Norwegian black metal scene escalated to burned-down churches and murder.

A wave of arsons crashed through Norway from 1992-1996, resulting in at least 50 attacks on Christian churches. Important historical and cultural landmarks were destroyed as the Norwegian black metal scene’s symbolic “retaliation” against Christianity.

Members of the black metal scene – most vocally, Mayhem guitarist Euronymous – presented themselves as militant misanthropic “Devil worshippers”. They wanted to spread hatred, sorrow and evil – an inversion of Christianity – and attacked the Church of Satan for being too “humane”.

However, their ideas were mainly intended to provoke. Those inside the scene held conflicting reports on the commitment to these beliefs; some were steadfast Satanists, while to others it was more about the image presented.

Lords of Chaos stars Rory Culkin (SignsIntruders) as Euronymous and Emory Cohen (Brooklyn) as his fellow musician and frenemy Varg, with costars Sky Ferreira, Jack Kilmer, and Valter Skarsgård.

The film will be released in theaters Feb. 8 and on demand Feb. 22.
