Direct to video horror was a huge staple in the 80’s and 90’s, and by extension, our childhoods. Though many couldn’t quite keep up with their originators, a lot of the time they still managed to keep the gore and wackiness high enough to keep our attention. I truly enjoyed last year’s Leprechaun Returns which recaptured this spirit, and had a blast rewatching it on home video!

Like many of it’s direct-to-video predecessors, Leprechaun has found new life on today’s modern video formats of DVD, Blu-Ray, VOD, and Digital. The picture and sound are great, the day and night scenes standing out. The kill scenes and gore look excellent on blu-ray in particular and the seamlessness of the FX shows its quality.

The real draw are the special features, though limited. There’s an in-depth interview with director/SFX-artist Steven Kostanski, a short behind the scenes look at the process of making Leprechaun Returns, and a Still Gallery video. The interview with Kostanski standing out in particular and showing the heart and soul that went into the process of making Leprechaun Returns and that he’s a fan of the franchise and understands the trappings that have made Leprechaun such a well-known comedy-horror series. Funnily enough, he mentions Leprechaun 3 (The Leprechaun in Las Vegas) and Leprechaun In Tha’ Hood (The Leprechaun in… the hood) as his personal favorites, and it shows. Another take-away I took from this interview was Kostanski talking about how watching the behind the scenes footage from Army Of Darkness was what influenced him into getting into FX work, and making me realize the influence that comedy-horror movie had on this one.

So, if you’re a Leprechaun fan or just looking for a fun and funny little horror on home video, Leprechaun Returns is well worth picking up.

Leprechaun Returns will be released on DVD, Blu-Ray, and Digital Tuesday, June 11th 2019
