Okay, so there are several parts of this that work and obviously some that don’t. But, I’ll let you be the judge. First, the bits that do work. Leigh Whannell (Upgrade, Saw) is set to write a remake for John Carpenter’s classic, Escape From New York. Bonus points, Whannell seems keen on getting Wyatt Russell (son of Kurt Russell) onboard to star.

Wyatt Russell (Overlord, Black Mirror) was an immediate go-to rally cry by fans when the remake was originally announced. When asked if Whannell would get Wyatt involved, Whannell said “That seems like the obvious thing to win the fans over.”

In addition to that good news Whannell also seems like he isn’t going to run into such a beloved classic haphazard.

Sometimes these press releases go out before you’re ready, you’re like, ‘Don’t tell the world!’ I don’t actually know, I really don’t. That is an iconic character and I think that Snake Plissken is a part of people’s childhood and their adolescence. It’s near and dear to them. So I would tread very carefully with that.

Now, the flip side to all that good news, is that there would be an Escape From New York remake at all. It’s beloved. However, with the success and fan acceptance of Carpenter’s Halloween. It’s possible that a remake might might actually work for fans if executed correctly and if it did creatively involve Russell’s son. Another issue I have with the project is that, I really want Whannell working on original material or a sequel to Upgrade.
