Everyone knows about Bird Box by now – you’ve used the internet in the past year, right? – but not everyone knows that the film is actually an adaptation from a novel of the same name by Josh Malerman. So for those who don’t know and need some more Bird Box, you’re welcome.
But for those who have already read the book, we have some good news: Malerman has a sequel coming! Titled Malorie, the book will focus on what happened to the main protagonist of the film after its conclusion.
Speaking with Esquire, Malerman said this:
“In the time between Bird Box coming out and the time since I’ve been writing Malorie, I’ve been asked a ton of times: people want to know what happened with Boy and Girl. But as much as I care about Boy and Girl, this isn’t their story. The Bird Box world is Malorie’s story, and I wanted to know more about her. I wanted to get to know her even better. At the end of the movie, I turned to my girl Allison and said, “I want to know what happens next!” and she’s like, “Well, you know, you could make that happen,” so it really was this warm feeling.”
But the author was very vague about what exactly we can expect from the next book. Later in the interview, he states:
“I don’t want to give too much away. Let me think of a cool way to put it. I will say this: we get to know both Malorie and the creatures better.”
We do know, however, that the book will be taking place eight years after the conclusion of Bird Box.
Malorie will be released October 1st, 2019 – just in time for Halloween.
