In a remarkable feat, the Todd Phillip’s disturbingly realistic depiction of Joker has become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, globally surpassing the $1 billion mark this weekend. That’s a lot of money.
And when the numbers came in, Phillips decided to show his gratitude towards the fans…you know, the ones who actually made these numbers a reality. Instead of boasting critical reviews and expert praise, a new video posted by Philips pulls quotes from just regular people on Twitter.
The Joker video also ends succinctly by saying “Thank you fans” in huge letters, taking up the whole screen. Whether you liked the film or not, I think that everyone agree to this being very respectable.

DC is no stranger to billion dollar grossings, but this film is definitely the anomaly. Security concerns and controversy surrounded the release of the film, and it still managed to perform well. And no, it’s not a traditional superhero film; with a smaller budget and a lack of grandiose exposition and literal explosion, Joker could have almost been an indie film.
This could be due to a number of things. Though an inherent appeal of the character exists, Joaquin Phoenix took the villain to a whole new level…proving that it’s not just the character, but who portrays it.
If you still haven’t seen Joker, maybe you should take this as an indication that it’s well worth the cost of admission. The numbers don’t lie, and though you may not trust critical opinion, the fans have spoken/
