He has scared us on Halloween, led us through The Fog, and introduced us to a dude named Snake in Escape from New York, and this year John Carpenter will have a most prestigious award to add to his already impressive list of accolades when he receives the Carrosse d’Or (Golden Coach) at the Cannes Director’s Fornight at the Cannes Film Festival.
Presented by the French Director’s Guild, the Golden Coach was established in 2002 and is given to directors who have blazed new and exciting trails in filmmaking. Previous recipients include Clint Eastwood, Naomi Kawase, David Cronenberg, and Jane Campion.
Variety quoted the official award letter describing Carpenter’s films saying, “In each of them, the work on space, on what is off-screen, on what is visible and invisible, is constantly renewed and regenerated in order to redefine fear.”
The letter further commented on both Carpenter’s inspiring work in film composition and electronic music.
Carpenter will receive the Carrosse d’Or on the opening night of the annual film festival, May, 15, 2019, and iHorror sends our congratulations to the horror master!
