Man, the 90’s were wild in it’s cinematic weight. The Mask is the 90’s personified. The film that starred Jim Carrey at peak Carrey is a mixed bag but is without a doubt one billion percent of its era.
The film didn’t carry any of it’s source material’s weight though. The Mask comic was not so kid friendly. In fact, it was often outright brutal and very horror-centric.
In a recent interview for Sonic the Hedgehog in which Carrey plays Dr. Eggman, Carrey spoke about what it would take to bring him back for another go with The Mask.
I don’t think in terms of sequels and stuff like that, I mean, this one is kind of right for it because we have not evolved the character fully yet. The Mask I think, myself, you know, it would depend on a filmmaker. It depends on a filmmaker really. I don’t want to do it just to do it. But I would only do it if it was some crazy visionary filmmaker. Sure.
The Mask was actually directed by notable horror dude, Chuck Russell. Notable because, he directed Nightmare on Elm Street III: The Dream Warriors and The Blob remake. While the first film wasn’t made up of very much horror, it would be great to see a sequel that was more in line with the brutality of the comics. And maybe that is something the “crazy visionary filmmaker” would bring to the table.
What do you guys think? Would you be down to see Carrey return to The Mask? Let us know in the comments section.
