Happy Death Day 2 is targeting its next victims with some fan favorites and newcomers announced for the Blumhouse sequel. Deadline reports Jessica Rothe and Israel Broussard are confirmed to return for more blood, gore, and alarm clocks in the follow-up to the Groundhog Day-style slasher flick. They will be joined by new arrivals Suraj Sharma (Life of Pi, Homeland) and Sarah Yarkin (American Horror Story, The Middle, Eat, Brains Love) to try and survive the nightmare that just won’t end.
Sharma and Yarkin’s characters will be Samar Ghosh and Dre Morgan, who are described as a scientific, geeky duo. Collider reported back in January that the sequel will take place immediately where the first film left off. The sequel is said to be similar to the Back to the Future 2 concept with retracing the events from the previous film. Christopher Landon will be returning as director, while also writing the screenplay this time around.
It seems instead of simply repeating the same formula from the first film, Landon intends to up the ante in the sequel. A Back to the Future 2 approach could mean multiple Tree characters running around, adding another layer to the suspense. It is also quite possible Tree and Carter will be seeking the help of Samar and Dre’s scientific expertise to try and figure out how to put an end to the time loop. It will be interesting to see what Landon has in store for us this time around.
Production is scheduled to begin May 10 of this year for the horror/thriller. No official release date has been announced, but it is likely the film could arrive in 2019.
