The fourth installment of the Jeepers Creepers franchise is already in the can. Titled Jeepers Creepers: Reborn, Screen Media has won the bid to distribute it in 2021 according to Variety.
Gone is the controversial director of the first three films, Victor Salva. In his place comes Iron Sky director Timo Vuorensola.
“It was a great opportunity for me to jump into the horror world and get to work with a franchise that has a large following and a great central character, the Creeper,” said Vuorensola in a statement. “I wanted to find a way to refresh the creature and introduce it to the new audiences of today and together with an amazing cast – – we managed to make a story that is fresh, fun and creepy.”
According to the logline, the movie takes place leading up to a horror fandom event:
“The film unfolds as the Horror Hound festival holds its first-ever event in Louisiana, where it attracts hundreds of geeks, freaks and die-hard horror fans from far and wide. Among them is fanboy Chase and his girlfriend Laine, who is forced to come along for the ride. But as the event approaches, Laine begins to experience unexplained premonitions and disturbing visions associated with the town’s past, and in particular, local legend/urban myth The Creeper. As the festival arrives and the blood-soaked entertainment builds to a frenzy, Laine believes that something unearthly has been summoned…and that she is at the center of it.”
Filming Reborn spanned two countries; from the United States to the U.K.
“As excited as we are, we know that fans will be even more thrilled (and chilled) to return to the world of the Creeper, now with a much scarier vision from director Timo Vuorensola, who is the perfect fit to restart this franchise,” said Screen Media in a statement,” said Screen Media’s Creative Executive Conor McAdam. He is also the film’s associate producer.
Jeepers Creepers has an immense cult following but fans were left in the lurch when it was discovered that Victor Salva’s past included a prison term for child sexual abuse among other charges. Salva served his time in prison starting in 1988. He completed his parole in 1992. Nine years later he would film Jeepers Creepers with stars, Justin Long and Gina Phillips.
There is no telling how loyal fans are going to react to this new entry. Some have already boycotted the franchise after learning of Salva’s past. But under a new helm perhaps this is where they will learn to welcome the Creeper once again and embrace him as the horror icon he deserves to be.
