It’s hard to argue that the Resident Evil movie franchise strayed very far from its roots in horror. Thankfully, screenwriter Greg Russo assured us that the Resident Evil reboot will return to the spirit of the video games.

Speaking with Discussing Film, Russo said:

“For me it was very clear cut that I wanted to go back and make it scary again like a horror film in terms of the classic James Wan style so that was the pitch, going back and looking what made the games scary in the first place so yea Resident Evil 7 was a bit of a touchstone for my draft.”

He continued:

“Not to shame the original film franchise that was made, I think that did very well. But I always considered the franchise to be horror at the forefront and action as a secondary feature.”

With James Wan producing the film, it’s safe to say that it will be in good hands. We’re hoping for more scares this time around – although it’s also important to note that, while not exclusively horror films, the franchise prior to this has been enjoyable.

But if you’re going to do a Resident Evil reboot and start things fresh, then come on; it’s gotta be horror or bust.
