Warner Bros. has finally set a release day for James Wan’s highly-anticipated Malignant. The feature will open on September 10, 2021 simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max following the distribution plan they laid out at the first of the year.
Plot details are still being withheld about the film which is based on a story written by Wan and writer/actress Ingrid Bisu. What we have been told from the beginning is that the reportedly brutal film will serve as a return to Wan’s roots as a horror filmmaker.
Wan is directing the film from a screenplay written by Akela Cooper. The September 10th release date takes advantage of the Labor Day time-frame that’s been a boon for genre filmmakers in recent years.
Wan took to social media to talk about the release:
In addition to the news for Malignant, Legendary announced that Godzilla vs. Kong will not, in fact, drop on March 26th in the U.S., but will instead make its way onto the big screen and HBO Max on March 31, 2021. The film will still release in foreign markets on the previously announced date. The shift, according to Deadline, is meant to take advantage of the longer weekend approaching Easter as well viewing possibilities with Spring Breakers.
The film finds the two iconic monsters in an epic showdown that is sure to be a cinematic experience.
Both Malignant and Godzilla vs. Kong are on our must-watch list in 2021. Let’s hope the release dates don’t change again! Let us know which one you’re looking forward to seeing most in the comments below!
