Jordan Peele’s ‘Lovecraft Country’ Lands a Director

Published

on

Jordan Peele

It’s only been a few days after his victory at the Oscars, and Get Out’s Jordan Peele has found his way into the commercial spotlight once more. Roughly ten months ago, Deadline announced that Peele – with his own Monkeypaw Productions – would be teaming up with J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot, and Warner Bros Television to produce an HBO series adaptation of author Matt Ruff’s 2016 novel Lovecraft Country. The project also consists of producer – and the pilot episode writer – Misha Green (Underground) and Ben Stephenson as their showrunner.

As for the director and executive producer of the first episode, Deadline broke that the team has just announced Yann Demange will fill both these roles for Jordan Peele’s Lovecraft Country.

For our readers who may not have read Lovecraft Country, the summary of the book reads as such:

Chicago, 1954. When his father Montrose goes missing, 22-year-old Army veteran Atticus Turner embarks on a road trip to New England to find him, accompanied by his Uncle George—publisher of The Safe Negro Travel Guide—and his childhood friend Letitia. On their journey to the manor of Mr. Braithwhite—heir to the estate that owned one of Atticus’s ancestors—they encounter both mundane terrors of white America and malevolent spirits that seem straight out of the weird tales George devours. (Via Amazon)

The books summary does not bare much difference in contrast to the plot of HBO’s Lovecraft Country:

Lovecraft Country follows Atticus Black as he joins up with his friend Letitia and his Uncle George to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father. This begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback. (Via Deadline)

If you’re unfamiliar with Demenge as a director, then it would be appropriate to peek into his credentials as a director. The UK based director oversaw the projects Dead Set, ’71, and Top Boy.

Dead Set revolves around a comedic plot of Big Brother season going completely wrong when it’s disrupted by hordes of undead swarming the hosting mansion; Top Boy is a series about two young men trying to ascend the ranks of the world of drugs and gang violence, all the while negatively affecting those close to them; and ’71 is a film about a British soldier who is abandoned by his unit during a riot taking place within “Catholic Nationalists vs Irish Protestants” Belfast, Ulster.

Whether it concerns government overreach of civilians, a civil war, or gang violence,  Demange is familiar with portraying severe social topics in the form of cinema or television.

It would seem that with the combined experience of horror and sci-fi narratives paired with issues within the real world, fans of Peele and Lovecraft can expect the anthology series to be insightful and entertaining; accordingly, this is also not to forget to mention the unnervingly suspenseful moments between being hunted by slithering daemons and the most conniving monster to ever grace earth: our “fellow,” man.

Watch ‘The Burning’ At The Location Where It Was Filmed

Published

on

Fangoria is reporting that fans of the 1981 slasher The Burning will be able to have a screening of the film at the location where it was filmed. The movie is set at Camp Blackfoot which is actually the Stonehaven Nature Preserve in Ransomville, New York.

This ticketed event will take place on August 3. Guests will be able to take a tour of the grounds as well as enjoy some campfire snacks along with the screening of The Burning.

The Burning

The film came out in the early ’80s when teen slashers were being churned out in magnum force. Thanks to Sean S. Cunningham’s Friday the 13th, filmmakers wanted to get in on the low-budget, high-profit movie market and a casket load of these types of films were produced, some better than others.

The Burning is one of the good ones, mostly because of the special effects from Tom Savini who had just come off of his groundbreaking work on Dawn of the Dead and Friday the 13th. He declined to do the sequel because of its illogical premise and instead signed on to do this movie. Also, a young Jason Alexander who would later go on to play George in Seinfeld is a featured player.

Because of its practical gore, The Burning had to be heavily edited before it received an R-rating. The MPAA was under the thumb of protest groups and political bigwigs to censor violent films at the time because slashers were just so graphic and detailed in their gore.

Tickets are $50, and if you want a special t-shirt, that will cost you another $25, You can get all the information by visiting the On Set Cinema webpage.
