Sophia Lillis is taking on more than a killer clown in an upcoming project based off of the popular Brothers Grimm fairytale Hansel and Gretel.
Lillis, 16, became widely recognized after her role as Beverly in 2017’s horror blockbuster IT. But Orion Pictures and Director Osgood Perkins (The Blackcoat’s Daughter) are currently utilizing her talents in the stylized title role of Gretel and Hansel, now filming in Dublin
You probably already know the story “Hansel and Gretel” about a brother and sister who get lost in the woods and fall prey to a cannibalistic witch.
The official synopsis of this film doesn’t stray far from that original plot which was first published in 1812:
“A long time ago in a distant fairytale countryside, a young girl leads her little brother into a dark wood in desperate search of food and work, only to stumble upon a nexus of terrifying evil.”
The last major motion picture to tell the story of the lost siblings was the underrated 2013 film Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton. This was more of an action film than a horror movie, but it had its moments.
Currently, Lillis is reprising her role as Beverly in IT: Chapter 2 with Jessica Chastain playing her older self.
Gretel and Hansel was written by Rob Hayes.
