Although the story of It is set to come to an end this month with It: Chapter 2, director Andy Muschietti says there’s more than enough Pennywise mythology to explore in future films. Though nothing’s currently on the table, he doesn’t rule it out.
In an interview with io9, producer Barbara Muschietti says that the plot definitely comes to a conclusion on September 6th when the film comes out. However, her brother chimed in to say that there is still more that could be done with the infamous Pennywise.
“There is a whole mythology to the book though … Mythology is something that always has opportunities to explore. It has been on Earth for millions of years. He’s been in contact with humans for hundreds of years, every 27 years. So you can imagine the amount of material.”
As anyone who has read the book knows, this is definitely true. Pennywise has been around since the dawn of time. It would certainly be interesting to see a new plotline set in a different timeframe. The possibilities are endless.
But right now, it’s just an idea. He states:
“It’s always exciting to think of eventually exploring this mythology … It’s very exciting. But, for now, there’s nothing on the table.”
Obviously, Stephen King only wrote one book featuring this character. But he goes into detail numerous times about the mysterious past of Pennywise, and there is definitely enough material to draw upon for a new film to be written.
Muschietti has done a faithful job doing the book justice and has a clear respect for King. I have no doubt that if the idea is ever greenlit, another movie involving the character would be faithful to the original spirit of Stephen King – even if the author doesn’t write it himself.
