Over two years ago, we here at iHorror brought readers the news of speculation over whether Universal had obtained the rights to Anne Rice’s beloved “Vampire Chronicles”, in hopes of rebooting the franchise. Well, a few months ago we got the official word that indeed the massive studio had not only obtained the rights, but had some plans to remake the absolute perfect Interview With the Vampire film that was released in theaters back in the righteous year of 1994. Although Miss Rice had her doubts about the film, mainly on the casting of her beloved Lestat who was portrayed by Tom Cruise, at the end of the day after sitting through a screening Rice retracted her statements proclaiming Cruise’s acting chops were brilliant and the perfect complement to her favorite fictional vampire.
Well for those who were totally against a remake of what is considered, one of the greatest vampire flicks ever, can rest a little easy. Via Anne Rice’s active Facebook account, she recently announced with glee that she has one again fully obtained the rights to her “Vampire Chronicles” books, (sounds weird doesn’t it? Rights to your own books…) and that her and her son author Christopher Rice, are going to be developing the excellent series of stories into a television series. As Rice believes the stories would be better told through the silver screen rather than a motion picture, she also made the announcement that the remake that we thought we were getting, is now a no-go. Rice stating, “Universal Studios and Imagine Entertainment had optioned the series to develop motion pictures from it, and though we had the pleasure of working with many fine people in connection with this plan, it did not work out. It is, more than ever, abundantly clear that television is where the vampires belong.”
So it looks as if Lestat, Louis, Armand, Marius and the entire tribe will breathe once again in visual form via the small screen with Anne Rice at the helm and Christopher serving as executive producer in this series that has fans, such as myself overjoyed and waiting in utter anticipation as this story develops over the next few months. Are you pumped for a weekly dose of Lestat? I know I sure as shit am! We’ll keep you up to date as more information trickles in.
